PGD (also known as PGS, Preimplantation Genetic Screening) stands for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis. This practice is carried out during IVF and ICSI procedure in reproductive technologies. During this procedure, Embryo is investigated for genetic abnormalities. This technique is widely used among many reproductive clinics nowadays. During the PGD procedure 1 or 2 cells of each 6-8 celled embryo are extracted before the embryotransfer procedure. Such manipulation allows to detect gender of the future baby on such an early stage with probability of 100%. Chromosomes can indicate the gender to a good embryologist.

Since the PGD method suggests invasion, that is equal to surgery for an embryo, there is a tiny possibility that the embryo will be harmed. A skilled embryologist will reduce the risk for the embryo using PGD process.
